◎ Japan and Yangoru-Saussia District Ties Relationship Through Classroom Opening （2017.2.22、EMTV)
The opening of a four-in-one classroom at the St Patrick's Sassoya Primary School
in the Yangoru-Saussia District has again strengthened the partnership
between the people of Japan and East Sepik Province.
Local MP, Richard Maru, during the opening ceremony last Sunday
told Japanese Ambassador to PNG, Satosha Nakajima,
that the district is ready to partner Japan to better develop the district
and the Province as a whole.
He said Japan must work close with East Sepik as they have ties dating back to
World War II.

Papua New Guinea will soon have its own Science and Mathematics textbooks
using local knowledge.
Under the Standard Based Curriculum, these Maths and Science booklets
will be used by lower primary grades.
The new text books, which are still in draft form, are under validation by pilot teachers
in Port Moresby.
According to the Head of the Curriculum Development Division,
the feedback by the pilot teachers will play a key role in drafting
the text books.
The text books will be used by grades one up to six.
This would be the first Maths and Science booklet created using local knowledge.
The newly developed text books aim to give a better illustration
and simple explanation to students.
For the Curriculum Division, the partnership with JICA is a stepping -stone
for the development of other materials in the Education sector. T
he project is funded by JICA under the QUISE-ME project.
Up to 40 teachers in Central and NCD took part in the validation process
before the first drafts will be compiled for publication.

◎ 水木しげるさんの人生を辿る「追悼水木しげる ゲゲゲの人生展」 （2017.2.24、アメーバニュース）

日本のみならず世界中の妖怪を研究・紹介した漫画家、水木しげるさん。
その人生を辿る「追悼水木しげる ゲゲゲの人生展」が2017年3月8日から20日まで、
東京銀座の「松屋銀座」で開催される。
境港の天才少年画家から漫画家に。少年時代の作品も展示
2015年11月30日、93歳であの世へと旅立った水木しげるさん。
ご存命ならば95歳の誕生日であった2017年3月8日から展覧会がスタート。
漫画原稿やスケッチ、写真など総出品数約350点を通じて、水木さんの生涯のテーマであった
「本当の幸福とは何か」を探る展示となっている。

◎ Japanese Ambassador: Human Development And Infrastructure Are Important Areas （2017.2.26、EMTV)
The Japanese Ambassador to Papua New Guinea, Satoshi Nakajima says
education is a priority area for Japanese aid.
It comes when schools in Papua New Guinea need more infrastructure
to cater for the influx of students adding schools across the country.
The Japanese Ambassador says infrastructure and human development
are also priority areas.
The PNG Governments bold move to give free education to every child
in the country will bring an educated population in the future.
But, there are challenges now.
Student numbers have increased, needing more classrooms,
tables and chairs among other infrastructure.
Now is the time where Papua New Guinea will need its partners more than ever.
The Embassy of Japan says they will give support.
"I saw that this country is so huge and the needs for education is also huge,
I would like to extend our continuous assistance," says Ambassador, Nakajima.
Yesterday a testimony of that support,
The Japanese official assistance development program funded three schools
under its Grassroots Human Security Projects.
Hohola Demonstration Primary School in NCD, Akuna Primary School in Eastern Highlands,
and Nunga Primary School in Western Highlands.
The Japanese Government is also funding a water project
for the Kokopo- Vunamami water project.
All together the aid presented yesterday was worth K742,000.
"Of course, some infrastructure, some roads is also important,
because this country is so big and connectivity is important for local areas,
Human development is also quite important," says the Ambassador.
The Japanese Ambassador, Satoshi Nakajima says
infrastructure and human resources development
will remain key priorities for the Japanese aid program.

魚で殺傷力？オーバーキル？と聞いたらサメが思い浮かぶかもしれないが、
人類にとっての水中の脅威はサメだけではない。
あの手この手で時と場合によっては人を死に至らしめるほどの能力をもつ魚も存在するのだ。
一部都市伝説化されていたり脚色されている部分もあるかもしれないが、
とりあえずその恐ろしい魚とやらのリストが公開されていたので見ていこう。
サメの襲撃話には聞き覚えがあるが、それよりもっと恐ろしく、
嫌な方法で殺しにかかってくる魚もいる。
体長90センチ、体重25キロほどのパクーは、人間そっくりの歯を生やしている。
もともとはアマゾン川で暮らしていたが、
ゲームフィッシングのために他の地域に導入され、北アメリカやアジアでも見られるようになった。
1994年、パプアニューギニアの漁師が2名が別々の場所で息子スティックを食いちぎられ、
出血多量で死亡したという記録がある。
だがパクーが息子スティックを狙って噛みつくというのはおかしな話だという
専門家の見解もあるので、
確かにかまれたんだろうけどそれは息子スティックではなかった可能性もある。

◎ パプアで現地楽団指導へ 元空自音楽隊長・浜松の水科さん （2017.2.27、静岡新聞）

元航空自衛隊航空中央音楽隊長（１佐）の水科克夫さん（６０）＝浜松市中区在住＝が、
３月から国際協力機構（ＪＩＣＡ）の派遣でパプアニューギニアに滞在し、
現地国防軍の音楽隊組織を支援する。
同国は２０１８年度アジア太平洋経済協力会議（ＡＰＥＣ）の議長国で、
音楽隊の最大の目標はＡＰＥＣ式典での演奏。
水科さんは「重責だが華々しくデビューさせられるよう頑張りたい」と意気込む。
水科さんは航空自衛隊の音楽隊で３６年間指揮者を務めたことなどが評価され、
防衛省の推薦で派遣が決まった。任期は１９年３月まで。
現地音楽隊の候補者約５０人に基本から吹奏楽を指導し、
各国首脳の前で披露できるレベルまで演奏力を高めるのが任務だ。
既に陸上自衛隊の音楽隊員が先行して技術指導を行っている。
今後は水科さんが中心となり、吹奏楽の歴史や楽器の扱い方、
実際に披露する国歌やパレード曲の演奏まで幅広い指導を担う。
居住する首都ポートモレスビーは強盗や窃盗が多発する都市で、夜間の外出も禁止。
水科さんと共に浜松市内で音楽パブを経営する妻の由美子さん（６６）は
「無事に帰ってきてくれれば」と祈る。
水科さんは「明治初期、英国の軍楽隊長が
薩摩藩の若者に音楽指導をしたことから日本の吹奏楽の歴史が始まった。
自分もパプアニューギニアに音楽文化を広めたい」と意欲を燃やす。

The government of Japan has once again come onboard to assist
the people of Papua New Guinea with funding by signing four grant contracts recently.
The water supply and classroom building contract was signed by
Japan's Ambassador Satoshi Nakajima to have these built
at Hohola Demonstration Primary School in NCD,
Akuna Primary School in Eastern Highlands,
Nunga Primary School in Western Highlands
and Kokopo Vunamami Urban LLG in East New Britain Province.
The Government of Japan extended
a total amount of about US$241,000 (K742,000) to each organisation
through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects
under Japan's Official Development Assistance Programme.
The funding assistance will see Hohola, Akuna and Nunga Primary Schools
increase the number of classrooms to cater to the growth in enrollment of students
as well provide a learning and teaching environment for both students and teacher.
